Prior to becoming an actor she started modeling as a child model. She was nominated for the Theatre World Award for "one of the most promising actors 1956-1957" for her role in The Potting Shed. Lynley began her career in film in the year 1958, with her debut in the Disney film The Light in the Forest. Her next film was Holiday for Lovers (1959) as well as Blue Denim (1959). In 1959, she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer - Female. She was nominated for the Golden Globe Award again for Most Promising Youngcomer - Female the following year for Blue Denim.
